Deming’s model of a system

In 1950, Deming drew the following model on the blackboard for his seminars with Japanese management. He often said that it remained on the blackboard throughout his first five years.

model of a system

The model emphasises understanding how the parts of a manufacturing system work together and are interdependent. Using this model, Deming taught that it was management’s job to work on optimisation of the whole.

Deming published this model in Out of the Crisis, Chapter 1.
