The purpose of any service organisation is to become the world’s most efficient provider of whatever service it offers. As an organisation improves in that direction, profits follow.
The evidence for the truth of this relationship (profits follow quality) is compelling.
To move in that direction, managers need different methods, it cannot be achieved through ‘command and control‘ management.
Some managers will tell you they are in business to make money. That’s not a purpose, it’s an outcome. If making money becomes the purpose managers will only sub-optimise their system, they will make less money and may even go bust.
