The head office management of an organisation had embarked on a programme they called Visible Management. This entailed spending some time doing a front-line job. They were supposed to be using the opportunity to remind themselves about conditions in that part of the organisation where the money is made. Instead they explained to staff the difficulties experienced in head office and gave the impression that the work head office had to do would be made much easier if the field staff would ‘do as they should!’

Tom knew he needed to get out and around so he just turned up and asked people how they were, how things were going. He was nice about it.

After two weeks his staff asked the director to stop him doing this – it was very nice but of no practical use. Tom was just getting in the way!
