Walk into corporate human resources and ask: “Do you have programmes for ‘people’ stuff, employee engagement, people make the difference, reward programmes, team development and things like that?” Chances are they’ll say yes and show you the manuals.

Walk out to where the work is done. What evidence do you see of these programmes in action?

People might tell you that they attended.

The problem with so many such programmes is that they are based on the idea that people make the difference. They can’t. It’s the system that governs how they behave.
